The Biggest Headache - Breeding
WHY NEUTERING IS A MUST

| I
took a phone call from a man who had got a greyhound bitch from a ‘boarding
/ rescue’ kennels. He wanted F.A.I.T.H. to take her as he wasn't coping,
and he already had another greyhound from a greyhound rescue - an un-castrated
male. I just knew that the bitch would be un-spayed and asked if they
could have mated. "Well" he said, "She has just finished
a season." |
||||
Thousands
and thousands of greyhounds are being destroyed every year and yet rescue
homes allow this sort of thing to happen. I find it incomprehensible how
anyone can allow un-neutered dogs of the opposite sex in the same household
- no matter what the breed. |
||||
| This
is just one of so many similar cases that come to our attention. |
||||
| If F.A.I.T.H. didn't have a FULL neutering policy we would be financially much better off, and be able to expand our buildings and land. But our aim is to help animals long term, to deal with the ultimate reality and knowledge that Today's dogs we must neuter - to save lives in the future |
||||
"Many thousands of dogs are destroyed each year because they have no home. We already help to stop this suffering by neutering all of the dogs that come into our care." National Canine Defence League |
||||
F.A.I.T.H. has the same philosophy, as stated in our Information Booklet. The Cat Protection League also follows and supports full neutering as the only way to stop unnecessary suffering in the future. |
||||
70% of the dogs that come into our rescue home - and I believe it is the same across the board - are uncastrated males. Their owners cannot cope with their behaviour and are not educated enough in this field to do so. Castration alone may not fix the problem. Re-training is needed following castration, but at least there is no need to fight testosterone, the hormone responsible for sexual feeling and aggression - a biological fact. Testosterone gives the drive we really do not want our rescued pet dogs to have, anymore so than we would want our tomcats fighting and roaming miles, scent marking as they go. Nor would we want our children's riding pony to be a stallion (though some are very nice, most are hard to handle). All working Guide dogs ARE castrated. Most Guard dogs ARE NOT and most pet owners ARE NOT dog handlers. |
||||
A Staffie cross - from a Manchester Dogs Home - went to a boarding / rescue kennels in this region. He was sold from there and a few months later was found abandoned in the staff quarters of a hotel. Another person took him for a while but couldn't cope and brought him to F.A.I.T.H. This time he didn’t go to a home without a home check and of course we had him castrated. That any Rescue Centre can send out fighting breeds un-neutered I find dreadful. |
||||
We had a retriever who had several homes. He was badly troubled by his hormones and unpleasant around other dogs and children. He could get quite excited about adults too, though that was the only time he showed any kind of interest in people. On walks his nose was on the ground in search of smells and tastes. You could talk to him and call him but he hardly seemed to know you were there and didn’t really care either way. Until that is, we had him neutered. Within weeks he changed. He’d wag his tail and come to you when called and he was a pleasure to have about. Within 1 month of homing him he featured in the local paper having saved his new owner from an attack. Had he not been neutered that would have been his opportunity to run off following his nose, untroubled and uninterested in his owner’s fate. |
||||
| There are many many examples of the wonders that neutering has had on male dogs that come into F.A.I.T.H. And as well as avoiding unwanted reproduction it has obvious health benefits. |
||||
| So
F.A.I.T.H. will continue with its full neutering policy at a HUGE cost
to the charity rather than send out un-neutered animals at a HUGE cost
to animal welfare. |
||||
At
a time where over-breeding and cruelty are on the increase, shouldn’t every
welfare society be implementing and promoting neutering? |
